All about old-age pensions – it doesn’t have to be complicated, but a total of 70 people attended the seminar yesterday at Hlíðasmári 11. The seminar will be repeated in streaming media on Wednesday, 27 September from 16.00 – 19.00.

One payment per year a good option

Every month, approximately 70 thousand individuals receive payments from TR and for part of the group, namely those with low payments, it can be more economical to receive one payment once a year. Thus, the rights of the person concerned are calculated annually based on the tax return of the last year and one payment is received afterwards.

Eligibility for old-age pension

It is noted that the average age for pensioners is 67 years old, but if an individual waits to apply for a pension beyond that time, then they can apply for their right up to two years back. If an individual does not apply for his/her right back in time, then his/her rights have not been cancelled, but he/she will enjoy a permanent increase in his/her rights in return for the time that the pension has been deferred. In addition, an early retirement pension can be applied for from 65 years old, in return for a permanent reduction in rights.

Agreement on social security rights with UK signed

Iceland has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom on the coordination of social security, which will apply in particular to old-age, invalidity, and survivor’s pensions, maternity or childbirth benefits, unemployment benefits, death benefits, sickness benefits and work accident benefits.

Increase in social security amounts by 2.5%

In accordance with Act No. 54/2023, Social Security payments will increase by 2.5% from 1 July 2023. The change in the monthly payments will be determined by the income of those who receive co-payments from TR.

Digital disability certificates on Ísland.is

Today, the possibility to download digital disability certificates was opened on Ísland.is and the chair of ÖBÍ, Þuríður Harpa Sigurðardóttir, has already downloaded the digital disability certificate on her smartphone.

The annual re-calculations for payments from TR are now available on My pages and on island.is for 2022. Those who received too low payments in 2022 will be refunded from TR in a special payment on June 1st.
