Changes in disability and rehabilitation, 1st of September 2025

Huld Magnúsdóttir Director General of TR was interviewed on Rás1 this morning about changes to the disability and rehabilitation pension system. In the beginning, she said, among other things, that in fact it was a case of new thinking and approach with these changes to get more people active for the benefit of them and society.

Amendments to the invalidity pension system approved by parliament

The bill by the Minister of Social Affairs, Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, on changes to the disability and rehabilitation pension system was approved by parliament on 22 June. The new system will take effect on 1 September 2025.

Yearly settlement of pension payments for 2023

The annual re-calculations for pension payments from TR for 2023 are now available on My pages of TR and on Ísland.is. Those who received too low payments in 2023 will be refunded from TR in a special payment on June 1st.

Due to misleading news coverage regarding the levy for 2023 in a group of TR customers, we would like to reassure you that TR did not provide incorrect information to the Icelandic Tax Service regarding the cash payments of TR customers.

The number of customers of TR has increased by 23% in the past decade

At the annual meeting of the Social Insurance Administration (TR) held on Tuesday, May 7, CEO Huld Magnúsdóttir stated that there has been an increase in all pension categories, but TR pays to a wide range of individuals. In the past decade, the number of TR customers has increased by 23%, with a total of 82,634 receiving payments from TR in 2023.
