How does a child become fathered?

For parents in a marriage or registered cohabitation, the husband or cohabiting partner is automatically the registered father of the child.

If a mother is neither married nor in a registered cohabitation, a child must be fathered within six months of its birth. You can complete a paternity certificate and report to the Registers Iceland.

A declared father may request blood tests (DNA testing) to determine the paternity of a child.

More information on the paternity of a child can be found here.
