Why Digital Mailbox?
The Digital Mailbox promotes efficient public services, increases transparency of procedures and administrative efficiency and ensures safe channels for the distribution of data to natural and legal persons.
The goal is to make the main channel of communication between governments and natural and legal persons digital and centralised in one place.

Data types
Public bodies shall publish in the mailbox all material concerning the specific interests of of the mailbox owner. This applies to any type of written and other forms of data resulting from the handling of a case by the government, such as notices, decisions, and rulings.
Public bodies shall not use the mailbox to publish advertising material or other material that does not concern the specific interests of the mailbox owner. This includes, for example, information on changed opening hours, surveys, newsletters, public challenges, or general indications of deadlines for the submission of data.
Public entities may publish in a digital mailbox both general and sensitive personal data of individuals as defined in the Act on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data.
Legal effect of publication
A piece of data in a digital mailbox is considered to be displayed when it has become available in the recipient's digital mailbox.
Children's data
Legal guardians have access to their children's data in a digital mailbox up to the age of 16.
Where is my data stored?
Documents displayed in the Digital mailbox are stored with the institution or public entity that sends the document. My Pages Ísland.is does not store any data; when a document is opened, the data is retrieved from the public entity that sent the document.
What about those who don’t want to view documents digitally?
Individuals or legal entities may request that government agencies send them documents in a different way than to the Digital mailbox. To make such a request, you can log in to My Pages, settings can be found in the upper-right corner. You can also make the request in person at the District Commissioner’s office by presenting identification.
The documents will remain accessible digitally, and their legal effects will be based on their publication in the Digital Mailbox.
