Deregistration

When you cancel your car registration an odometer reading must be logged as soon as the Icelandic Transportation Authority receives notification of the deregistration.

If the odometer cannot be read, for example if the car has been stolen or is damaged, an estimate will be made based on available records. If no records are available, the Directorate of Internal Revenue will base the estimates on average driving distances.

Cars without license plates

No kilometer fee is required for a car if the license plates have been surrendered to the registration body.

Surrendering license plates is conditioned upon the odometer being read at the time of plate return.
