Child support payers

Residence abroad

Residence is irrelevant to the obligation to pay child support. Therefore, child support payers must contact the District Commissioner of North-West Iceland if resided outside the country to arrange for payments.

Note that under the Nordic agreement on the mutual collection of child support contributions, the District Commissioner may request for the defaulted child support debt to be collected by the Nordic authorities. This includes registration on the default register in their home country, claims in wages and traditional recovery measures. Note that when a debt has been sent for collection under the agreement it is not withdrawn until settled.

The debt of the child support payers who reside outside the Nordic countries is sent for collection by a law firm in the country concerned, with associated costs and inconvenience.

When payments are executed by means of a transfer from a foreign bank, a receipt must be sent by e-mail to medlag@syslumenn.is with information about the receiver of the child support.
