Wetland protection

Wetlands foster important ecosystems and enjoy special protection according to nature conservation laws.

Wetlands are important habitats for plants, birds, fish, and small animals. A large portion of birds in Iceland base their livelihood to some extent on wetlands, which often host a wide variety of plant and small animal species. Therefore, the protection of wetlands involves the protection of biodiversity.

Wetland protection is important because wetlands are crucial ecosystems:

  • Wetlands are home to many birds, plants, and small animals.

  • They store large amounts of carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Wetlands regulate water flow, reduce flooding, and improve water quality.

  • Protection and restoration of wetlands help in the fight against climate change.

By restoring disturbed wetland areas, we regain various benefits that undisturbed wetlands provide us:

  • bird species return,

  • positive effects on biodiversity,

  • water quality,

  • greenhouse gas emissions.

The best option is always to protect undisturbed wetlands.
