Carbon Accounting

Soil plays a key role in the carbon cycle. With the increase in fossil fuel use, we have released a large amount of carbon that was previously stored in the ground into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, causing climate warming. To address this, we need to both reduce emissions and increase carbon sequestration.

Soil is one of the most permanent carbon stores that exists. By sequestering carbon in soil, we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere while simultaneously enhancing soil fertility and water retention.

The goal is to collect and record the status of carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions.

The data is submitted to the Climate Convention's data portal, and the Environment Agency's annual report provides an overview of Iceland's climate accounting.
