Psychologists at the Suðurlands Health Care Centre are involved in the treatment of children and young people up to the age of 18, clients of mental health teams as well as collaboration with the infant and child health services as well as maternity care.
Primary healthcare physicians refer psychologists to the centre, so booking a doctor's appointment is the first step. Psychologists are present at most primary health centres and try to meet people as far as possible at centres in their vicinity. Specialist services at schools, childminders and upper secondary school counsellors can also refer to the service.

Referral to psychological services
A doctor at a health center sends a referral to a psychologist for further evaluation. You can expect a waiting time for services that can vary from establishment to establishment.
Services of psychologists
Treatment of children and adolescents (under 18) with mild to moderate emotional and behavioral problems. In general, 6 to 8 interviews are planned. Healthcare is not a long-term solution for a serious mental health problem. If the problem is considered multifaceted or long-lasting, parents are instructed on appropriate remedies.
Counseling interviews with parents in the case of young children or children with behavioral problems. Generally, 1 to 3 counseling interviews are planned.
Treatment of children is always carried out in cooperation with parents.
Psychologists do not perform developmental diagnoses such as ADHD diagnoses, intelligence tests, or autism diagnoses.
Psychologists collaborate with midwives in maternal and infant care and provide treatment and counseling based on their referral.
Psychologists sit in a multidisciplinary mental health team and treat clients based on a referral from a case manager.
Individual and group therapy is provided, as well as psychologists involved in joint education.
Psychologists at the HSU health centers collaborate with the center's doctors, nurses and midwives. They work in multidisciplinary teams within an organization and with other organizations.
