Judicial matters

The National Archives of Iceland keeps documents of cases that have been tried in Iceland and are generally older than 30 years old.

If you cannot find the court case in the above files, you can send a query to the library.

Please note that to find documents about cases that have been brought before a court, some precise information needs to be available, including the court level, municipality and parties. It is also helpful to specify case number, yearly report, type of case, facts and date of court appearance.

There are usually no access restrictions on court orders, although there are exceptions. Attachment documents may be subject to access restrictions.

If more than 80 years have passed since the verdict in the case, there are no restrictions on access to its data.
