Participation in payment for dental care

Dental corrections

A grant of ISK 430.000 is granted if fixed devices are placed on at least 10 adult teeth in each gum, but ISK 290.000 if fixed devices are placed only in one gum. The condition is that the service is provided by a specialist in orthodontics and the orthodontic treatment is done with fixed devices (stangles). The condition is also that treatment with fixed devices begins before the age of 21 and that the person has not previously received a grant for orthodontics.

Grants are paid to a orthodontist as soon as costs are incurred until the grant amount is fully paid.

Dentists send applications electronically to Iceland Health under the supervision of their clients.

Travel expenses for orthodontic treatments

Two trips may be taken during a twelve-month period for trips made before 31.12.2023 and three trips during the period 01.01.2024 to 30.06.2024.

The Regulation on travel expenses of nationally insured health insurance was amended on 01.07.2024 and is now allowed to participate in four trips in the calendar year for trips made from 01.07.2024. The rights to four trips between 01.07.2024 - 31.12. 2024 are reduced if trips made between 01.01.2024 - 30.06.2024 have been paid.

If a trip has been used for treatment by other parties within the healthcare system, this will reduce the rights to travel for the orthodontic treatment. Travel costs are never fully refunded, it is a patient's share of each trip.

The condition is that the person concerned receives a grant for orthodontic treatment.

Applications must be made beforehand for both a dental restoration grant and travel expenses. An expert in dental restoration sends applications to Iceland Health.

A specialist does not need to apply for travel expenses for trips that are made as of 01.07. 2024. An individual must submit a confirmation of arrival/dental bill from a specialist together with receipts for travel expenses electronically through Data submission of individuals or to the district commissioner in the home region.

Retreated trips are permitted for the most serious cases and a specialist in orthodontics must always apply for travel expenses for this purpose on the form Skýrsla vegna ferðakostnaðar sjúklings innanlands.
