Notification of citizenship for young people 18-20 years old

A young person aged 18 to 20, who has lived in Iceland continuously since he or she was 13 years old, may acquire Icelandic citizenship by notifying the Directorate of Immigration.

Conditions

To be eligible for Icelandic citizenship by notification, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You are over 18 years old and under 21 years old.

  • You have had legal domicile in Iceland since the age of 13.

  • You have resided continuously in Iceland since the age of 13.

Fee

The processing fee is 13.500 ISK.

The notification will not be processed until payment has been received. Read on how to pay the processing fee via bank transfer.

Application

Notifications can only be submitted in paper form.

They can either be sent by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate’s reception.

Supporting documents

Read more on document requirements. Original Icelandic documents do not need to be authenticated.

  1. Notification: In original format, properly filled out and signed.

  2. Payment receipt.

  3. Passport: Copy of the pages with personal information, handwriting sample, and all stamps.

  4. Birth certificate: Certified copy of the original. The original must be legally authenticated by apostille certification or chain authentication, before a certified copy is made.

  5. Translation of birth certificate: If the certificate is not in English or a Nordic language, you must submit a certified copy or original translation made by a certified translator.

  6. Certificate of legal registration history: The certificate specifies the countries where you have had legal residence from the start of your registration in Iceland until the present day.

  7. School certificate, if applicable: From elementary and/or secondary schools you have attended in Iceland.

Law

Icelandic citizenship is granted to young people 18 to 20 years old according to Article 3(1) of the Icelandic Nationality Act Number 100/1952.
