The Ísland.is App

A child has the right to maintain contact with both parents. If the parents of a child under the age of 18 do not live together, they must agree on the child's visitation arrangements.

The purpose of visitation is primarily to:

  • Ensure the child’s right to maintain contact and a relationship with the parent they do not live with

  • Ensure the parent's right to spend time with their child, as long as it is not contrary to the child’s best interests

Cost

There is no fee for the district commissioner’s confirmation of a visitation agreement or for a ruling on visitation.

Cooperation after Divorce

Attention is drawn to the SES (Cooperation after Divorce) service, which offers courses for parents and children as well as specialized counseling provided by municipalities, including matters of custody and visitation. More information can be found on the website www.samvinnaeftirskilnad.is.
