Minister of Health Alma Möller, Member of Parliament for the Northeast Constituency Eydís Ásbjörnsdóttir, and the Minister’s Assistant Jón Magnús Kristjánsson visited SAk today.
Hildigunnur Svavarsdóttir, CEO of SAk, described the visit as highly enjoyable:
"It is extremely valuable to welcome the Minister of Health, his assistant, and a member of parliament for the constituency. During this visit, we had the opportunity to discuss numerous important issues related to challenges, opportunities, development, and our vision for the future here at SAk. Among other things, we specifically discussed the financial situation, staffing, medical specializations, the importance of modernizing facilities and medical equipment, as well as quality and improvement efforts. Our guests also visited the operating rooms, the intensive care unit, and the psychiatric ward, where they had the opportunity to engage in conversations with representatives from each department about their work.”
Minister of Health Alma Möller echoed these sentiments:"It was truly a pleasure to visit Akureyri Hospital and have meaningful conversations with the management and staff. It was particularly positive to experience the ambition and solution-oriented mindset that characterizes SAk’s employees. The Icelandic healthcare system is fundamentally strong, thanks to outstanding healthcare professionals. Nevertheless, it is evident that there are many aspects that need improvement. Like the rest of the healthcare system, SAk has an accumulated infrastructure debt that must be addressed in a systematic manner.
Exciting times lie ahead for SAk, with the planned new hospital building, which will have a very positive impact, and it is crucial that this development does not face delays. Additionally, I have initiated work on defining SAk as the country's emergency backup hospital, as it is essential that its role is clearly defined—especially regarding emergency response plans, crisis management, national security, ambulance services, diagnostic services, and healthcare legislation. The classification of SAk as an emergency backup hospital is key to making informed decisions about its future development.”*
