Doctors’ Strike Canceled Following Agreement on Wage Contract
25th November 2024
The first round of the planned doctors’ strikes, which was set to begin at midnight, has been canceled after an agreement was reached on the main points of a new wage contract late last night.
In a statement from the Icelandic Medical Association (Læknafélag Íslands, LÍ), it was announced that negotiations with the government had progressed significantly in recent days and made substantial headway today toward a settlement. Consequently, the association’s board and negotiating committee decided to cancel the strikes, which were scheduled to take place from midnight until noon, Monday through Thursday of the coming week.
“The board and negotiating committee of LÍ believe that in this situation, canceling the first round of strikes is the right course of action. This decision enhances the likelihood of reaching an agreement sooner and more successfully,” the statement reads.
LÍ members will continue to receive updates on the progress of the negotiations as they develop, but a final agreement has yet to be concluded.
The decision is considered a significant step toward resolving tensions between doctors and the government. Disputes over doctors’ wages and working conditions have persisted in Iceland for a long time.
