Approximately 7,000 Icelanders have applied for a passport on island.is.
13th March 2024
In October 2023 pre-registration and payment for passport applications became available on island.is. Since then, approximately 7,000 people have applied for a passport electronically, or about half of applicants.
Tis option has been well received, especially by guardians applying for children under their custody. The process is that applicants pre-register an application for themselves or a child under their custody, as well as choosing the place of delivery of the passport. Once the registration and payment on the web is completed, the applicant attends at the District Commissioner to complete the part of the application process that requires attendance, such as photo, signature and fingerprint registration.
After pre-registration of passports must attend at District Commissioner within 30 days. Applications for children must be confirmed by both guardians, where applicable, within 7 days of pre-registration. It´s sufficient for one of the guardians to accompany the child for a photo appointment, which can be done at any District Commissioner´s office regardless of residence.
