Permits for fireworks displays and bonfires during the holidays
5th December 2024
Individuals who wish to hold bonfires and/or fireworks displays on New Year's Eve and/or on the 6th of January are encouraged to apply for permits in a timely manner.
There are various things to consider when planning a fireworks display, and it is good to familiarize yourself with these aspects. The application must detail several items, and various conditions must be met. More information can be found here: https://island.is/leyfi-til-flugeldasyningar.
Bonfires under 100 cubic meters are not required to be registered with the health inspection authority, but they must be reported by filling out a form on the service portal at: https://hsl.is/. More information can be found on the website of the South Iceland Health Inspection Authority.
You need to apply for a permit to burn a bonfire if it is larger than one cubic meter. This can be done here: https://island.is/brennuleyfi.
If you plan to hold a bonfire that is over 100 cubic meters, you need to apply for a permit, which can be done here: https://island.is/leyfi-fyrir-staerri-brennu. The application must also detail several items, such as the person responsible for the bonfire, location, date, time, and an aerial photo of the bonfire site, to name a few.
