Is everything okay with the passport?
28th January 2025
Did you know!... that one of the most annoying things you can encounter is passport trouble when you're about to go on vacation.
Therefore, it is good to keep various things in mind. For example, many have encountered problems due to the validity period of passports. Most countries within the EEA and Schengen require travel documents (passports and ID cards) to be valid for at least three months beyond the planned stay in the respective country. However, many countries outside the EEA require travel documents to be valid for at least six months longer. In some cases, even longer validity periods are required. Therefore, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the requirements of the countries you plan to visit.
You might also need to consider visas. In cases where there is no reciprocal agreement between the countries, travelers need to contact the embassy of the respective country in relation to Iceland or obtain information on its website to check whether a visa is required in advance and how to apply for it. Information about visas can be found on the website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
There are also various other things that might need attention, such as emergency passports or passports for newborn Icelanders abroad, and it is good to check the FAQ page on the Government Offices' website.
You can also access passport applications and get information about the fee schedule at the district commissioners' offices.
