If you have lost Icelandic citizenship, you may in certain cases be able to have it granted again.

Icelandic citizenship lost before July 1, 2003

Iceland allowed dual citizenship on July 1, 2003. Before that time, an Icelandic citizen lost their Icelandic citizenship upon being granted foreign citizenship.

If you obtained foreign citizenship before July 1, 2003 and thereby lost your Icelandic citizenship, you can request to regain Icelandic citizenship from the Directorate of Immigration. The condition is that you have lived or stayed in Iceland or had connections with the country that are considered sufficient to maintain Icelandic citizenship.

Nordic citizens

If you are a Nordic citizen and were previously an Icelandic citizen, you can request to regain Icelandic citizenship from the Directorate of Immigration. The condition is that you have legal residence in Iceland.

People born and raised in Iceland

If you are a foreign citizen who was born with Icelandic citizenship and had continuous legal residence in Iceland until the age of 18, you can request to regain your Icelandic citizenship from the Directorate of Immigration. The condition is that you must have had legal residence in Iceland for two years.
