Renewal of expired driving licences

Applications for renewal of driving licences at the end of the period of validity may be submitted to the District Commissioners, irrespective of where the applicant is domiciled in Iceland.

A driving licence may be renewed after its period of validity if the applicant still fulfils the conditions for the issue of a driving licence. An applicant for a renewal of a driving licence, which has already been completed more than two years after the expiry of the period of validity of the licence, shall be subject to a roadworthiness test.

In certain cases you must submit a passphrase. If an applicant has to wear glasses or lenses while driving or has any other health problem that may affect driving, a medical certificate from a general practitioner must be returned.

Cost

Renewal of the driving licence costs 8,600 ISK.

Conditions

• Driver not deprived of his/her driving licence

• If an applicant has an older version of a driving licence, a new passphrase is required

• When replacing a major examination, a medical certificate must always be submitted

• Being permanently resident in Iceland

Application process

An application for renewal of a driving licence must be completed and submitted to the District Commissioners office.

Renewal of the postgraduate diploma without qualifications

You can renew a postgraduate degree without attending a continuing education course. If the applicant has not attended a continuing education course, the applicant does not receive a professional registration number in his/her driving licence, but retains his/her licence to take the driving test.

Renewal of the postgraduate diploma with qualifications

Courses of continuing education must be taken before applying for a renewal of the licence to operate category D1 and D for commercial passenger transport and for category C1 and C for commercial road freight transport.
