  • Electronic ID by phone works in nearly all types of phone, whether it is a new smartphone or an older mobile phone.

  • The ID is saved to your phone's SIM card. In order to use them, only a mobile phone is required, no other device is required. You then select a PIN that you type into the phone each time you use your electronic ID.

  • When applying for an electronic ID with a SIM card, both the ID number and the name registered in the National Registry at that time are stored in the electronic ID.

  • If a name is changed in the National Registry thereafter, it will not change on the electronic ID. Users who change their name in the National Registry are to revoke their electronic ID and receive a new one.

How do I get an electronic ID by phone?

The first step is to ensure that you have a SIM card that supports electronic ID's. If you are not sure, you can check it out here.

If your SIM card does not support electronic identification, go to your local telephone company store or to a reseller and have the card exchanged. You can also check to see if you can get the card sent home.

How do I enable the identification?

Before using electronic ID's, it must be activated, but it can be done at these service points.

You have to present a valid identification document (passport, driver's license or an identification card issued by the National Registry of Iceland) and sign a contract in connection with a new electronic ID. You also select one 4-8 character PIN to use on the electronic ID. It is a good idea to have the number decided before you arrive at one of the service points.

How do I use electronic ID on a mobile phone?

  1. You access a website on the service to which you intend to use the electronic ID.

  2. Selects to login with an electronic ID and enter your mobile phone number.

  3. It is a good idea to unlock the phone before pressing forward. Automatically a screen on your mobile phone will be displayed, where the request must be confirmed. If the request is confirmed, another window will be displayed where you enter the PIN code you chose when the electronic ID was produced and you will be logged in.

It is important to watch out for your mobile phone and PIN number on the electronic ID. Never enter the PIN number of your electronic ID if you do not know where the request is coming from.

How long will the electronic ID last on your mobile phone?

The electronic ID have a validity period of 5 years. Before the ID expires, a notification is sent by e-mail and text to the person concerned, informing them that the ID has expired. The electronic ID's can be renewed on every service point.
