Notification of citizenship for Nordic citizens

Nordic citizens have different pathways to acquire Icelandic citizenship.

If you have lived in Iceland for at least three years, you can submit a notification. For information about notification for Nordic citizens, continue reading this page.

If you are not eligible to submit a notification, you can still apply for Icelandic citizenship through a general application. This process requires that you have lived in Iceland for at least four years. For information about application for Icelandic citizenship read:

Notifications are simpler to handle than general applications and cost less, so we recommend you first check to see if you are eligible to submit a notification.

Conditions

In order for you, as a Nordic citizen, to become an Icelandic citizen through notification, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have been a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden since your birth.

  • You must have reached the age of 18.

  • You must have lived in Iceland for the past three years.

  • You must have not been sentenced to prison or other incarceration in the past three years.

Fee

The processing fee is 13.500 ISK.

The notification will not be processed until payment has been received. Read on how to pay the processing fee via bank transfer.

Application

Notifications can only be submitted in paper form.

They can either be sent by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate’s reception.

Supporting documents

Read more on document requirements. Original Icelandic documents do not need to be authenticated.

  1. Notification: In original format, properly filled out and signed.

  2. Payment receipt.

  3. Passport: Copy of the pages with personal information, handwriting sample, and all stamps.

  4. Birth certificate: Certified copy of the original. The original must be legally authenticated by apostille certification or chain authentication, before a certified copy is made.

    If the certificate is in a language other than Icelandic, English or a Nordic language, a certified translation must also be submitted.

  5. Certificate of legal registration history: The certificate specifies the countries where you have had legal residence from the start of your registration in Iceland until the present day.

If you have children under the age of 18

Your children can become Icelandic citizens at the same time as you, if:

  • They are under the age of 18.

  • They have legal residence in Iceland.

  • They are unmarried.

  • You have custody of the child.

Supporting documents for children

  1. Passport: Copy of the pages with personal information, handwriting sample, and all stamps.

  2. Birth certificate: Certified copy of the original. The original must be legally authenticated by apostille certification or chain authentication, before a certified copy is made.

    If the certificate is in a language other than Icelandic, English or a Nordic language, a certified translation must also be submitted.

  3. Custody documents.

    1. If you have sole custody of the child, you must submit documentation as proof. Original documents must be certified with an apostille or double authentication before a certified copy ist made.

      If documents are in a language other than Icelandic, English or a Nordic language, a certified translation must also be submitted.

    2. If both parents share custody, you must submit a signed consent of the other custodial parent and a copy of the parent's passport.

  4. Consent of the child: If the child is between 12 and 18 years old.

Law

Icelandic citizenship is granted to Nordic citizens pursuant to Article 14 B of the Icelandic Nationality Act Number 100/1952.
