Requirements to be met by the host family
The family must consist of a married couple or cohabiting partners with a child or children or a single parent with a child or children.
At least one adult member of the family must hold Icelandic citizenship or a permanent residence permit. This means that a couple residence permits cannot be a host family and a single parent with a temporary residence permit may also not be a host family.
There may not be a familial connection between the host family and the au pair.
A host family may only have one individual as an au pair at a time.
A host family must provide au pair food and a lockable separate room with a window, free of charge.
A host family must demonstrate sufficient means of support for an au pair.
A host family must pay au pair a minimum of ISK 15,000 per week in allowance.
The Directorate of Immigration may request information about a host family, including information on financial assistance or other assistance by the social services of the relevant municipality, as well as information about a criminal record, both in Iceland and abroad, if the Directorate considers it necessary.
