Grant for purchase of a specially equipped car
If a person cannot get by without a specially equipped vehicle due to a severe disability, it is possible to apply for a grant to purchase a specially equipped vehicle, which is necessary to work, study, rehabilitate or attend medical services. The applicant must meet the same conditions as in order to be approved for the lower grant for the purchase of a car, however, there are more requirements for the need for assistive devices and disability when applying for a grant for the purchase of a specially equipped car.
The applicant's need for assistive devices and a vehicle must be assessed holistically and demonstrate that the applicant has a special need for a specially equipped vehicle. There must also be an assessment by the Icelandic Health Insurance Agency of the applicant's need for assistive devices, and TR must have approved the choice of a vehicle taking into account the assistive devices the applicant needs.
As a general rule, people who use electric wheelchairs, or similar aids, to get around and have to sit in such in the car are considered. Comparable solutions are also examined.
The applicant must be:
assessed as having severe mobility problems, for example, using a wheelchair or two crutches on a regular basis,
health insured in Iceland.

Information for parents of children with reduced mobility
Generally, no grant is granted for a specially equipped car for parents of children with reduced mobility under the age of 10.
In certain cases, derogations are granted.
For example, if a child:
is dependent on heavy and bulky assistive devices while in a car,
is very tall or heavy in relation to age,
needs a truly comparable vehicle and an adult in a comparable facility.
