Permission to transfer a body between cemeteries

If it is requested that a body is to be moved from one grave site to another, special permission must be obtained. This also applies if a request is made to move an urn between grave sites.

Processing applications can take some time. Therefore, it is necessary to apply for the transfer in a timely manner if it is intended to take place on a specific date.

Who can apply?

Certain rules apply regarding who can apply for the transfer of a body. Those who can apply must have a connection to the deceased and can include:

  • Spouse

  • Cohabiting partner

  • Children or other descendants

  • Parents

  • Siblings

Application process

First, a request must be made to the administration of the relevant cemetery for the body to be moved between grave sites. The administration then sends the request to the District Commissioner of Northeast Iceland, who grants the permission. The application must include the following information:

  • Date of birth of the deceased

  • Date of death of the deceased

  • Date of burial

  • Cause of death (if known)

  • Reason for the transfer

  • New burial site

The District Commissioner seeks opinions from the bishop and the chief medical officer of the relevant health district. If all conditions are met, the District Commissioner issues the permit, and the transfer can proceed. If the District Commissioner denies the transfer, the decision can be appealed to the Ministry of Justice.
