Surrender of Legal Practice Rights

If a lawyer with active legal practice rights does not intend to practice as a lawyer or cannot meet the conditions required to retain those rights, they must surrender their rights to the District Commissioner of Northeast Iceland. While the rights are surrendered, they are inactive, and the lawyer cannot undertake tasks reserved for lawyers or be required to fulfill the obligations imposed on lawyers.

Process:

Electronic notification of the surrender of rights.

The original license certificate must be sent by mail to:
District Commissioner of Northeast Iceland
Gránugata 4-6
580 Siglufjörður

When the District Commissioner has received these documents, the surrender is announced in the Official Gazette (Lögbirtingablaðið), and a notification is sent to the Icelandic Bar Association.

The lawyer may request to have the license reinstated free of charge if they meet the conditions to practice as a lawyer.
