Since 2018, an action plan has been put into effect to reduce suicide in Iceland (Icelandic). This action plan is organised into six main categories:

  1. Promoting mental health and resilience in the community

  2. Quality mental health services

  3. Limitation of access to dangerous substances, objects, and conditions

  4. Actions to reduce risk among specific groups at risk

  5. Support for relatives and survivors

  6. Increasing knowledge in the field of suicide and suicide prevention

The total number of actions stands at 56. Most fall under the Ministry of Health's responsibility. As outlined in the action plan, several actions have been completed; some are currently underway, while others remain pending.

The actions are carried out in collaboration with numerous institutions and associations. The project manager of Lífbrú at the Directorate of Health is responsible for project management.
