Road safety strategy
The road safety strategy is part of the transport strategy and its role is to:
increase road safety in Iceland
reduce the number of road accidents
improving traffic culture
is a policy programme and is set for fifteen years. This programme contains numerical goals as well as priorities and policies on road safety. The current road safety programme is valid from 2024-2038.
Reduction of accidents
The objectives of reducing accidents are two:
That Iceland will be among the five best European nations in terms of the number of traffic deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

The number of people who died and those who were seriously injured will on average fall by 5% per year by 2034.
Better behaviour goals in the road
The current programme sets out for the first time objectives for better behaviour in traffic which are to contribute to:
improves traffic culture
fewer accidents
