General driving tests will be electronic from 16 May 2024
16th May 2024
From 16 May 2024, theoretical general driving tests will be electronic across the country.
From now on, all student drivers will take the B-license test in a computerized format at the Frumherji test center. This modernization of the theoretical driving tests allows student drivers to see their results immediately. The new system uses a ready-made test format that enables continuous review of both tests and individual questions.
The electronic test will be a single comprehensive exam, no longer split into two parts. Test questions have been updated to minimize misunderstandings, now presented as statements that students must mark as true or false. The test consists of 50 statements, and students need to answer at least 46 correctly to pass, maintaining the same passing percentage as before.
The introduction of electronic theoretical driving tests represents a significant improvement in the service provided to student drivers, aiming to simplify and enhance quality through ongoing refinement. While most student drivers aim for a general driver's license (B license), preparations are underway to implement electronic tests for higher license categories.
The Icelandic Transport Authority supervises this project, in collaboration with Frumherji, which administers the driving tests.
