Insurance companies will handle damage assessments due to sea floods

3rd March 2025

Events where flooding from the ocean suddenly reaches land and causes damage or destruction to insured property are considered natural disasters that NTÍ insures against, and therefore the damage that occurred in the weekend's sea floods will be examined and assessed by NTI and a decision will be made regarding liability for compensation.

An agreement has been made with the Icelandic insurance companies to oversee the damage assessment and handle communications with those who have suffered damage due to the sea floods, and customers can report their damage directly to their insurance company. If NTÍ receives a report of damage due to the sea floods, NTÍ will provide all necessary information to the insurance company in question.

In this context, it is worth keeping in mind that:

1. All residential property that is insured against fire by an insurance company with a license to operate in Iceland is covered by NTÍ.
2. The same applies to movable property or household goods that are insured against fire by a general insurance company.

The deductible is 2% of the loss amount, but the minimum deductible is ISK 400,000 for residential property and ISK 200,000 for movable property.

The customer's insurance company will contact the customer and inform them of the planned damage assessment and, if necessary, rescue operations on behalf of NTÍ. All customer communications will be between the customer's insurance company and the customer until the insurance company's damage assessment is available. The insurance company will then send all information about the damage to NTÍ, which will present the results to the customer and handle all subsequent communications with the customer.
