Minister and MP visit Land and Forest
6th March 2025
On Thursday, February 27th, Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson visited Land and Forest Iceland in Gunnarsholt, accompanied by his staff. Parliamentary members also toured the facility during their constituency week.

The Minister received a welcome from Ágúst Sigurðsson, Director of Land and Forest Iceland, and other Institute leadership. A presentation of the Institute's activities and projects was delivered. Discussions with the Minister encompassed key initiatives, including wetland revitalisation and other land improvements on state-owned properties, and the necessity of constructing a new indoor seed orchard facility in Vaglir to enhance Hrymur larch hybrid production. Funding for the LULUCF reform program and temporary Institute contributions (scheduled for discontinuation in 2026) were also addressed. Furthermore, the requirement for a new Icelandic soil map and the advancement of incentive projects, including a proposed new National Gift mirroring the 1974 initiative commemorating Iceland's 1100th settlement anniversary, were discussed.

The Minister and his team displayed keen interest in Land and Forest Iceland operations and related issues, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the institution's vital role. The Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change is implementing a revised organisational structure, incorporating only two new professional units. Land and Forest Iceland will be assigned to a unit directed by Björn Helgi Barkarson.
Following a presentation of the Centre's activities and projects, the Minister toured the Gunnarsholt facilities, specifically exploring the advanced seed production capabilities. Land and Forest Iceland extends its appreciation to Minister Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson and his delegation for their visit.
During constituency week, Members of Parliament Víðir Reynisson, Ása Berglind Hjálmarsdóttir, and Eydís Ásbjörnsdóttir (Samfylking Party) visited Gunnarsholt. Furthermore, MP Ingvar Þóroddsson (Viðreisn Party) visited the Institute's Egilsstaðir office. Land and Forest Iceland expresses its gratitude to all visiting parliamentarians.
