On 22 May 2022, a monkeypox had been confirmed in 59 individuals in nine countries in Europe (Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom) and in addition 10 were suspected of being infected.

Recently, there have been reports of infections with monkeypox virus in several countries in Europe, e.g. the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Sweden, but the disease has also been detected in the United States and Canada.

In early April 2022, a study was conducted in the capital area, investigating the spread of COVID-19 among individuals 20-80 years old. The research project was a collaboration between the Chief Epidemiologist and DeCODE genetics.

A review of death certificates from the Directorate of Health has revealed that there have been 153 deaths in Iceland due to COVID-19 from the beginning of the epidemic until 1 April 2022.

The Directorate of Health advertises the work of the Chief Epidemiologist as vacant. The work of the Chief Epidemiologist is subject to the provisions of the Icelandic Centre for Disease Control Act, No. 19 of 1997, as subsequently amended, regulations and other legislation as appropriate.
The Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason has formally resigned from his post as of 1 September 2022.
