Antibiotic Awareness Day

The day of 18 November is particularly dedicated to raising awareness about antibiotics at the European Union Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The same day, the World Health Organization (WHO) initiates an awareness week on prudent antibiotic use.

The purpose of raising awareness is to remind the public, government, healthcare professionals, and other parties about the threat of the global spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The causes of antibiotic resistance are diverse, but careless use of antibiotics in humans and animals is one of the most important. There is evidence that antibiotic use in humans outside hospitals is increasing again in Iceland after contracting during the COVID-19 epidemic.

On the occasion of European Antibiotic Awareness Day, the Chief Epidemiologist will hold a seminar on antibiotics and antibiotic resistance on Thursday 16 November, from 13:00–15:00 at the premises of the Icelandic Centre for the Development of Healthcare in the Loftid Room, Álfabakki 16, 109 Reykjavik.

The maximum number in the room will be 50 people, but you will also be able to connect with a teleconference with Teams.

Please indicate participation before 14.11.2023 by emailing juliana.hedinsdottir@landlaeknir.is. Please indicate whether you intend to attend the meeting or listen to the meeting (in Icelandic) on a streaming basis. A link to the meeting will be sent to those who have registered, nearby.

See seminar program (Icelandic).
