Actions to prevent the spread of farmed salmon

The Directorate of Fisheries has sent a message to freshwater fisheries associations with recommendations on what measures may be taken in the circumstances that have arisen due to farmed salmon in rivers.
The Directorate of Fisheries has authorised temporary closure of salmon ladders and extended the salmon fishing seasons in order to protect ecological losses in fishing rivers and recommended all fishing communities adapt such measures. Freshwater fisheries association have also been informed of further measures available if deemed necessary. Such as trawling, searching with lights or drift diving, they should contact.
The Directorate has also requested the freshwater fishing associations to notify if farmed salmon is caught in rivers and send to the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute.
The Directorate will continue to monitor closely the progress of the current situation in order to assess scope of the necessary measures.
