Application for a Identity Card on Ísland.is

A digital application for an Identity Card can now available on Ísland.is.

Applications for an Identity Card are now opened on Ísland.is. The Identity Card is one of three personal identification documents that can be used for identification in Iceland. The personal identification documents are the Identity Card, driver's license, and passport.

Identity Cards are valid personal identification documents that confirm the identity and nationality of the holder and are used for identification purposes. There are two types of Identity Cards, one for identification purposes only and the other for both identification purposes and as a travel document within the European Economic Area.

Examples of cases where identification is required in Iceland are when medicines are bought at pharmacies when electronic IDs are applied for, and when voting is held.

To obtain an Identity Card, you must apply on Ísland.is followed by a photo appointment with the District Commissioner. The processing time thereafter is up to six working days plus the sending time.

Digital versions of Identity Cards, such as driving licenses and passports, are being developed. The digital certificate will only be valid in Iceland and will not be considered a valid travel document.

The National Registry is responsible for issuing the Identity Cards in collaboration with the District Commissioners who handle the photography and delivery. The digital application of the Identity Card is also in collaboration with Digital Iceland.

Further information on the application process, cost, and delivery of the Identity Card can be found on Ísland.is
