Marriage abroad

If nothing stands in the way of establishing a marriage abroad, The District Commissioner of the Westman Islands will issue a certificate to this effect.

Applicant must have a legal domicile in Iceland.

You can apply with electronic identification (rafræn skilríki) at the bottom of this page.

If you do not have an electronic ID, you can contact the District Commissioner of Westman Islands at 458 2900 or send an e-mail to giftingerlendis@syslumenn.is to receive a form.


Attachments with written application

  • A copy of passport, driving licence or an ID card, certified by the District Commissioner

  • Certificate of marital status from the Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá).

Application processing time

The District Commissioners certificate is sent to the applicant's inbox on island.is or by other means if requested, within 3 working days, if all conditions are met.


Confirmation of Icelandic Documents

Foreign authorities may require that Icelandic documents be formally certified by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Iceland, by Apostille certification. This confirms that the document is issued by an Icelandic authority.


Cost

The applicant pays for certificates, which must accompany the application and, if needed, an Apostille certification.
