Request appointment for pressing charges

When it is known who violated the law, a person can file an appeal against them. It is also possible to file an appeal against someone who is suspected of a crime.

To file a complaint, you must attend a police station and report. To report and file a complaint with the police is called the complaints office.

Complaints regarding sexual offences

The police station at Hlemmur in Reykjavík has a special reception for victims of sexual offences who file charges.

The difference between a complaint and an indictment

Dear

A person can press charges against another person for a violation against him. Submitting charges does not mean that a suspect is charged with a violation.

Charge

Before an individual is charged, the police must investigate the case. There are also institutions with prosecution powers that decide whether an individual is charged with a crime or not. The prosecution powers are held by the police chiefs of nine police departments in the country, the district attorney and the state prosecutor. If an individual is charged, the case becomes a criminal case in the legal system.
