Daily Fines and Administrative Fines of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority

The District Commissioner of Northwest Iceland handles the collection of the following claims from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority:

  • Daily fines

  • Administrative fines

Collection Process

When a claim is created, it appears in the debtor's online bank account. Collection letters are sent to the individual's mailbox on island.is.

If the claim is not paid within 30 days of the collection letter being sent, and no agreement has been made regarding the claim, a collection letter is served.

The following measures can be taken to enforce payment:

Payment Installments

A request for payment installments must be submitted in writing to the email address innheimta@syslumenn.is or by mail to the District Commissioner of Northwest Iceland's office. The minimum amount for monthly payments in installments is 10,000 ISK.

Please note that it is possible to pay the claim via bank transfer to account number 0159-26-267, social security number (kennitala) 660914-0990. The social security number and name of the debtor must be provided when making the payment at the bank.

Payment by credit card is also accepted.

Appeal Routes

It is possible to appeal the decision of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority to the Ministry of Industries and Innovation within 14 days of receiving the decision regarding daily fines.

An administrative appeal does not suspend the legal effects of the decision but does halt enforcement. If the decision of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority has been appealed, a confirmation of this must be sent to the District Commissioner of Northwest Iceland at the email address innheimta@syslumenn.is.

Daily fines that have not been collected will be canceled if the individual later complies with the demands of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority.

A person who does not accept the decision of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority regarding an administrative fine may file a lawsuit for invalidation in court within three months of being notified of the decision. A lawsuit does not suspend the legal effects of the decision nor the authority for enforcement.

Information about imposed daily fines can be found on the website of the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority.
