On this page

You can apply for an identity card for you and an individual in your custody at the District Commissioner website. In the application you pre-register your information and only need to attend a photo shoot at a District commissioner office in order for an identity card to be issued.

  1. An Identity card that is a travel document within the EEA.

  2. An identity card that is not a travel document.

More information about the differences between these types of identity cards can be found on the Registry of Iceland (Þjóðskrá) website.

  • Applicant has an Icelandic citizenship

  • That the validity period of the current identity card is less than 9 months. Otherwise, you have to apply at a District Commissioner office.

  • Applicant has an electronic ID

Application process

1. Pre-register an application on Ísland.is and pay.

When applying for a child, a guardian applies for the identity card and pays online. Where custody is shared, the other party gets an automatic request to accept the application. The approval must be given within 30 days, otherwise the application expires and you need to apply for a refund. Children have 30 days to come for a photo shoot, others have 90 days.

2. Attend a photo shoot within 90 days at a district commissioner office, located throughout the country. You can book an appointment in the Greater Reykjavík area.

  • A valid ID (passport, Icelandic driver's license or identity card) must always be presented when applying.

  • It is sufficient that only one guardians attends with a child under 18 years of age for the photo shoot. The guardian must show identification. If a third party comes with the child, he must present mandate.

If the photo shoot is not attended within 90 days, or if an application is cancelled after that time, it is necessary for the applicant themselves to request a refund at endurgreidsla@island.is.

Pre-registration of an application is not possible if there are more than 9 months left of the validity period of an older identity card.
