Application for a license to drive a school

The Icelandic Transport Authority issues licenses for driving schools for all driving licence categories.

Conditions of authorisation

A professional administrator shall be a licensed driving instructor.

The driving school shall have access to educational counseling and the counsellor shall have educational qualifications, be a driving instructor with a university degree or a driving instructor who has completed a special course on pedagogy, group teaching and innovation technology

The driving school shall provide a textbook and carry out an internal evaluation of the quality of teaching. The textbook shall be reviewed annually and sent to the Icelandic Transport Authority before 1 March each year

The driving school shall have access to vehicles registered for teaching

The driving school shall have a place where there is facilities for theoretical teaching and, where appropriate, practical teaching

A driving school shall be registered in the company register.

If remote learning is conducted by a driving school, the school must have a remote learning system approved by the Icelandic Transport Authority.

A driving school may be permitted to hold courses in a place other than the one specified in the license.

When a driving school licence is issued, the applicant must submit an application to the Icelandic Transport Authority, which checks whether the conditions for attending school are met.
