International Forest Day devoted to the nutrition of forests

21st March 2025

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) have designated 2025's International Day of Forests and Trees to focus on forests and nutrition. A photography competition, concluding March 12th, complements this initiative. Furthermore, the FAO has produced a corresponding video in all six official UN languages.

The UN General Assembly established March 21st as the International Day of Forests to highlight the significance of all forest and tree ecosystems. Forests have been a key component of international dialogues since the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.

Annually, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), convening the World Forum on Forests, designates a theme for the International Day of Forests. This year's focus on Forests and Nutrition underscores the critical role of global forests in sustaining worldwide nutrition and human survival. Beyond serving as sources of food, energy, income, and employment, forests enhance soil fertility, contribute to clean water supplies, and support diverse habitats and species, including pollinators essential for crop production.
