New Regulation on reimbursement of costs for the services of self-employed doctors

On 3 December 2024 , the Regulation on reimbursement of costs for the services of self-employed specialist doctors came into force.

Regulation on reimbursement of costs for services of self-employed doctors who have not been contracted out (Regulation No 1440/2024) and on 15 January the tariff for the following works came into force:

  • Bone density measurement for individuals at risk

  • OCT scanning by your eye doctor

  • Medical paper/letter from a neurologist in a foreign language for medical treatment abroad, upon request of the Iceland Health

  • Interdisciplinary patient meeting, at the request of the patient or family members

  • Vaccination. The condition is that the patient has been advised of free (cheaper) vaccination in the healthcare center.

Article 3 of the Regulation states that the cost part of the health insured person shall be 90% of the total price according to the tariff, while the Iceland Health pays 10% of the total price. In the case of children, elderly or disabled, the health insured person pays 85% of the total price according to the tariff, while the Iceland Health pays 15% of the total price.

The cost share of the health insured person for the work specified in the Iceland Health tariff does not constitute a discount base according to the applicable regulation on the participation of the health insured person in the cost of health care.
