Respiratory tract infections. Week 12 of 2023

30th March 2023

Confirmed cases of Influenza were fewer in week 12 compared to week 11, whereas the number of clinical diagnoses of Influenza-like illness were similar between weeks.

The uncertainty level of civil protection due to the COVID-19 pandemic was cancelled in week 12. Monitoring, surveillance, and response to COVID-19 will continue in the same manner as for other communicable diseases monitored by the Chief Epidemiologist. Many European countries have shifted towards reduced testing for COVID-19. The number of COVID-19 cases in week 12 was similar to week 11. It is probable that more are infected as testing has been reduced. The number of clinical diagnoses of scarlet fever is dropping and the same seems to apply for clinical diagnoses of sore throat. RSV cases have dropped as well as cases of adenovirus and coronaviruses other than SARS-CoV-2. Admissions to Landspitali with/due to COVID-19 and Influenza in week 12 were similar in number compared to week 11. No admissions due to RSV were registered in week 12.

In a new report (Icelandic), the incidence of respiratory diseases in week 12 of 2023 is reviewed in more detail.
