The Directorate of Health publishes for the first time key healthcare indicators. The publication aims to facilitate access to indicators that provide evidence of certain key aspects of healthcare in Iceland and how they compare to neighboring countries. The office hopes that the publication of key healthcare indicators will support the decision-making of health authorities to maximize the effectiveness and quality of the service.

Selection of key indicators

Indicators defined by the OECD and based on evidence-based knowledge were selected. A limited number of key indicators were selected, or 34 key indicators, and they are divided into three main categories. The categories are (a) investment in healthcare, (b) access and prevention, and (c) performance and quality of healthcare.

The indicators are accessible in a summary table and show changes between measurements and comparisons with other Nordic countries. The table will be updated annually. Later the indicators will be presented in an interactive dashboard, where their development over time will be presented. On the Directorate of Health's website, there is a brief discussion of each selected key indicator and a reference to a more detailed discussion on the OECD website (Icelandic).

The indicators are discussed in the latest issue of Talnabrunnur (Icelandic).
