492 Icelandic language proficiency tests for citizenship

The Icelandic language test for citizenship took place from November 18 to December 2. Of the 492 participants who took the test, 84% met the basic Icelandic language requirements for citizenship. The test was conducted in 24 sessions across Reykjavík, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, and Ísafjörður. This year saw a record number of participants.

One of the basic requirements for citizenship is that the applicants have passed this test, which is based on the final objective of the Icelandic language course for foreigners (240 hours), according to the curriculum of the Ministry of Children and Education. It corresponds to the A1-A2 skill objective from the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

It must be demonstrated that the applicant can:

  • save themselves in daily situations in school, work and private life.

  • save themselves in unexpected circumstances.

  • participate in discussions on familiar topics.

  • understand simple conversations.

  • read short texts in simple language.

  • write short texts in simple language.

  • analyse the main points in television, radio and newspaper.
