Digital certificates

Digital certificates allow users to provide proof of rights with their mobile phone in a suitable and safe way, even if a printed licence is forgotten or lost.

Table of contents

Digital certificates are implemented by Digital Iceland for public bodies issuing them. Digital certificates are digital versions of certificates which are based on some kind of user's rights. Examples of these include a driving licence, a right to operate heavy machinery, firearms licences and disability licences. Digital certificates are designed to be in two sections for the user:

  1. Displaying an overview of certain rights in the Island.is app and on My pages on Island.is, as well as the possibility to retrieve a digital certificate for saving to a smartphone.

  2. Version of a digital certificate stored in Apple Wallet on iPhone or SmartWallet on Android.

A certificate scanner built into the Island.is app can also be used to verify that other users' digital certificates are valid and not revoked. This can increase security even further than most today's printed licenses.

Benefits for government agencies

  • Improved service for certificate users.

  • Possibility of reducing the activity and costs of issuing printed plastic licences.

  • The increased security of electronic authentication of digital certificates reduces the likelihood of falsification
