Avian influenza

  • Influenza viruses that impact animals differ from those causing seasonal flu in humans. These animal influenza viruses, known as zoonoses, can be transmitted between animals and humans, either directly or indirectly. People who contract animal influenza can experience a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, and in some cases, the illness can be fatal.

  • Human infections from animal influenza viruses are rare and typically occur through direct contact with infected animals, their carcasses, or contaminated environments. Currently, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of circulating animal influenza viruses.

  • Vigilance is crucial regarding potential human infections by animal influenza viruses. Symptoms may be atypical and warrant further investigation. Gathering epidemiological information, including animal contact and travel history, is essential for public health protection.
