Listing of planning consultants

The Planning Agency maintains a list of planning consultants, who are authorized to work on planning. Certain conditions for education and/or work experience must be met to carry out the preparation of planning plans, which are specified in Article 7 of the Planning Act.

A planning consultant must meet one of the following conditions:

Be a planning specialist with the authorization of the Minister.
Be an architect, civil engineer, landscape architect, technical engineer or engineer authorised by the Minister and meet one of the following conditions:
- Have specialized training in the field of planning.
- Worked in the field of planning for at least two years

The organisation shall follow the following procedures for the evaluation of applications for inclusion in the list of approved planning consultants (see Article 7(2) to (5)):

Specialization in the field of education and training in the field of planning is a course in the field of planning at a different level of university, corresponding to at least 60 ECTS units, as per the criteria for higher education and degrees, such as the theory of planning, planning processes, planning legislation, planning methods, planning proposal processing, environmental assessment and similar are a significant part of higher education. This can include research projects in the field of planning that are part of education at a different level of university. An application for inclusion in a list according to Article 7, paragraph 8 of the Icelandic Planning Act must provide a confirmed overview of the course of study, which specifies the individual courses, their scope and course descriptions.

Specialization in the field of planning is the work on large-scale planning projects, such as the drawing up of planning descriptions, analysis of planning assumptions, consultations on planning, environmental assessment, the development of policies, objectives and provisions of planning plans and/or the development of planning abstracts and the planning of areas. An application for inclusion in a list pursuant to Article 7, paragraph 8 of the Planning Act must include a documented summary of the work experience, which specifies the main projects in the field of planning, their scope and the subject matters that the applicant covered in each project.

Those parties that meet the abovementioned conditions may request the inclusion of them in the list of the Agency of the Directorate of Management, of those who are authorized to carry out the drawing up of the planning plans.

Uapplication

An application with the following accompanying documents must be submitted to the Icelandic National Planning Agency.

Confirmation of the Minister's authorization for a professional title, No. 8/1996 on the approval of several professional titles in the technical and design fields.

If applying for specialisation:

In education: a confirmed overview of the education with course descriptions.
On the job: a confirmed summary of the work experience and the main organisational tasks, along with a description of the applicant's role in those tasks.
